Sydney Flower: Roses
Sydney flowers
June is celebrated as rose month. Roses are still very popular Sydney flowers - an open rose bloom is the most beautiful of all. The modern commercially grown rose has seen many changes over the last decade. The wide color range is truly amazing which now includes many soft pastels, terra cotta, burgundy/black, bicolors, stripes and the coveted 'blue rose', which is still not really blue, but a mauvy blue. Rose varieties keep changing. New varieties are created to improve color, to last longer, to have a higher petal count and for the bud to open better. The actual number of petals in a Australia flower varies. A higher number of petals make the rose fuller and more beautiful, especially suited to Martha Stewart's open look rose designs. Consumers are asking for fragrant roses again. Most roses have a slight fragrance, especially when they are placed into a warm, confined space. Recently, I had 50 supposedly non-fragrant roses in a very warm, small car on the ferry to Sydney. The perfume of these roses was overwhelming.
Unfortunately, the strongly fragrant roses don't last as long as non-fragrant roses. The scent forms as the aromatic oils develop, at the same time maturing the Flower much more quickly. Many consumers think that the tight rose bud lasts longer. It is really a myth that the slightly open rose does not last as long. Some rose varieties open very quickly into the big beautiful flower and last extremely well. Certain rose varieties do not open readily and the splendor of the full flower stays hidden. There are rose growers who tend to hurry their rose crop along and pick the roses too tight. A very tight rose might open in a humid commercial cooler, but does not develop under regular home conditions.
The perfect rose is the one that is slightly to one third open, has a sturdy stem and glossy green foliage. As mentioned in the legendary myth, roses which is Sydney Flower could be applied on the skin to enhance the complexion and brighteness of the person.
